Getting into Malaysia is through the international airport at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang or the Low Cost Carrier Terminal using budget airlines. There are also many other international airports located in different states in around Malaysia like Penang, Johor, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching in Sarawak. Each state generally houses its own domestic airport for easy transits.
Alternatively you can travel by train or by bus that will take you between states, cities and towns. Self drive too are available from the many car rental agencies. For this, if you are an oversea tourist would require an international driving license.
As Malaysia is made up of 13 states and 3 Federal Territories, it is important to first know what are the available transport modes in within the country. it is important to identify how you intend to get around in the cities and towns and there you will be able to engage the services of the operators. This is because in within the states and cities, you will be offered with an abundant of different types of transport that will bring you around the district or even to neighbouring states. For instance, you can either that the taxis in Penang or choose to take the trishaw which can give you a great view of the city.
Public buses are available in all towns as well as in the capital of Kuala Lumpur. From here, you can find out which bus number takes you to the desired destination. Although it can be frustrating at times, be sure to read up on what to expect when boarding the public buses as the wait can take up to an hour at times.
Taxis too are available and when possible ensure that the taxis run on the taxi meter if you want to avoid feeling cheated afterwards. Some taxis do not use the meters and quote you on a specific amount for taking you to your destination. Over in East Malaysia, transport is harder as the towns are located very far away from one another. Therefore it would be faster and more convenient to go around towns using budget airlines like Air Asia or MAS Wings. Both the airlines requires online booking, so ensure that you have made prior arrangements before visiting East Malaysia.
